If you are a student or have children and you are going to move to Mallorca, it’s necessary that you know how the education system works, so it doesn’t take you unawares.

Spanish education is regulated by the Ministry of Education, but it’s the governments of each region that are responsible for financing the educational centers in their respective territories.

Primary education consists of six courses, from six to twelve years. Prior to this, there is a pre-primary education that is divided into two cycles. The first one, from 0 to 3 years (which requires payment); and the second, from 3 to 6 years, that is completely free and taught in public schools.

High School education in Spain is obligatory and free from the age of 6 to 16. But families must also take care of the school supplies that their children will use in each of the 6 courses they must complete.

Although there are also semi-private schools that require payment in every stage, and are related to the Catholic Church, they are very disciplinary and have a decent education.

The last year of high school, ranges from 16 to 18 years old is also free but not mandatory, and prepares young people to enter university or gives them a vocational training.

College education is the most common option and is divided into:

  • Degree. It’s a four-year programs in which a particular subject is studied in depth.
  • Master degree. It’s a one year course to specialize in a specific subject. To access it is necessary to have passed a degree.
  • Doctorate or PhD. It’s the maximum training provided by universities and consists of an investigation of about three years.
